Dressed to the nines, I made my way up to London on the train. Although feeling a little silly for being dressed up so early in the morning, I just tried to ignore everyone staring at me. I met up with my colleague, Peter, and we both made our way up to the Grosvenor House Hotel, on Park Lane. We were welcomed with a champagne reception, which is not something I recommend to drink before midday! Then everyone was ushered in the exquisite ballroom, full of candle lit tables. The only bad thing about the whole day was that our table was at the back at the hall, and we were not able to see the stage that well.
For some unknown reason I was quite nervous, maybe it was because I was dumb struck at the sight of A1? On our table was one of the nominees for the award we were sponsoring, the Junior Sporting Success Award. His name was Christopher, who later became my autograph hunting partner. When everyone was sitting down, we all started to search through our goodie bags under our chairs, in my bag was a mini radio, which made my day as I had something to listen to on the way home. As I flicked through the brochure about all the nominees, I was astounded by what all the young people nominated had achieved. Christopher on my table was a cross county runner, I can't even run for a bus! For people who had such a terrible condition, they had really done some amazing things.
The event certainly was an eye opening experience. I had only heard about CF a couple of years ago, when a girl in my school, who had CF, unfortunately passed away. I certainly learnt a great deal from being at the awards. I was also shocked to discover that, as of yet, there is no cure, only treatments, such as physiotherapy and a lot of medication. However, there is a possible cure, through gene therapy, if only fifteen million pounds could be raised for the vital research. It really hit home just how important charities like the CF Trust are. The award ceremony was entertaining, and educational. It even brought a tear to my eye at a couple of points. Though there were a few technical hitches, as the whole thing was being recorded for Living TV, which meant a few retakes. But all in all things ran smoothly. There were a few famous faces presenting the awards such as Charlie Dimmock, Harry Enfield and Jenny Agutter, and musical performances from the likes of Liberty X. But for some unknown reason, fate of God or maybe I was jinxed? I made the biggest fool of myself. It all started to go wrong when the ceremony ended and I wanted to go to the loo. As I was walking around the corner I tripped right over a light stand, which I didn't notice, only to look up and see Liberty X standing there watching me. So I just smiled at them and carried on walking to the toilet, which I then couldn't find, and when I did I couldn't find my way back! But my embarrassment didn't end there, when I got back to my table I realised that the empty table next to ours was now full, and guess who happened to be sitting at it? Yep, Liberty X.
You would have thought I would have stopped there but oh no. I thought I might as well do the embarrassing thing, of get their autographs, as I had already embarrassed myself in front of them once. But I then proceeded to say, very cheesily, that they were much better than hear'say, if looks could kill. I did the rounds and got as many autographs from famous people as I could, and I was really happy as I met the man of my dreams, Adrian Dickson, from CBBC. I tell you girls he was absolutely gorgeous in real life, only he didn't beg me for my phone number, never mind.
Finally, I would just like to say a big thank you to the CF Trust for an amazing afternoon, and congratulations to all the winners and nominees, to be nominated is a great award itself. And big congratulations to Sophie Wood the winner of the award we sponsored. Televised highlights were shown on Living TV. Nicci Burt. |
